English text
Four jolly, jolly smiths, with their hammers great,
Strike boldly the whole day long;
Each mighty, mighty swing, both early and late,
Keeps time to a jovial song.
And the deep-toned note, as each hand hath smote,
Is heard loud above the blow;
And the sparks of light, as they gleam so bright,
O’er their swarthy faces glow.
With a bang and a clang, and a jingle, jingle huge bars as lads do toys,
And dry jokes crack huskily.
So with headlong swing and rebounding ring,
They tell of good labour done;
And each honest name hath the sterling fame
Those four jolly smiths have won.
With a bang and a clang, and a ring ding dong,
The work goes merrily rolling along,
With a bang and a clang, and a ring ding dong,
The work goes merrily rolling along.
Four jolly, jolly smiths, with their hammers great,
Strike boldly the whole day long;
Each mighty, mighty swing, both early and late,
Keeps time to a jovial song.
And the deepton’d note, as each hand hath smote,
Is heard loud above the blow;
And the sparks of light, as they gleam so bright,
O’er their swarthy faces glow.
With a bang and a clang, and a jollily, jollily each one will say,
“We’ve done our very, very best.”
Then the thought so dear will each bosom cheer,
That the young smiths still strike on;
And feed well the fire of their resting sires,
Who their work have nobly done.
