Biography

William Beatton Moonie was born at the station master’s house at Stobo railway station, Scotland, while his parents were taking a holiday from their Edinburgh home. His father James Anderson Moonie (1853–1923) was a music teacher, founder of the Hope Park Musical Association and “Mr. Moonie’s Choir.” He was educated at Daniel Stewart’s College, Edinburgh University, and the University of Frankfurt. He taught at Edinburgh Provincial Training College, was music master at Daniel Stewart’s College, and held positions at George Heriot’s School, Watson’s Ladies College, and Dean’s College. He died in Edinburgh. His compositions include operas, cantatas, orchestral works, chamber music, organ and piano pieces, songs, and part-songs.
