Sturton
Life
Fl.: 1503–1511
Biography
Two compositions attributed to 'Sturton' (or 'Stourton') survive: a setting of Gaude virgo mater Christi in the Eton Choirbook and a setting of Ave Maria ancilla Trinitatis in the Lambeth Choirbook. The identity of the composer is uncertain. The Eton Choirbook calls him ‘Edmundus’, but this Christian name is a later addition in a thinner and smaller script than the surname. No musician called Edmund Sturton is known and it has been suggested that the composer is more likely to be the William Sturton who is recorded as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal between 1503 and the funeral of Prince Henry in February 1511. This is plausible, yet whoever took the trouble to add the ‘Edmundus’ in the Eton manuscript must have had a reason for so doing. The two compositions are dissimilar in style and the possibility that there were by two different men cannot be dismissed.
On the rejection of the name Edmund Sturton, see the notes to E10 on page 57 here: https://www.diamm.ac.uk/documents/676/Eton_text_final.pdf
