Biography

The composer Hacomplaynt or Hacomplayne (no Christian name given) was probably the Robert Hacomblen who was admitted a King's Scholar at Eton in 1469 at the age of thirteen from the parish of St Andrew, London. In 1472 he was admitted to a sholarship at King's College where he acquired several degrees and took holy orders. In 1492 he was presented to the vicarage of Prescot, Lancashire and the following year resigned his fellowship of King's College. He was elected provost of King's College in 1509 and held the office until he died. Hacomplaynt's only surviving work is a five-part Salve regina in the Eton Choirbook. In 1529 one the books of polyphony at King's College contained 'Hacomplaynes Gaude', evidently a setting of Gaude flore virginali or Gaude virgo mater Christi, but this work is lost.
