English text
The sun had sunk in crimson west,
The twilight stars were shining,
The moon rose full and loveliest,
With light the hilltops lining.
The gentle birds had gone to rest,
The kids had stopped their roaming;
The eagle, too, had sought his nest,
O’er billows wildly foaming.
The pale moon’s clear and mellow light,
O’er all the face of nature,
New beauty added to each sight,
By softening every feature.
It smoothed the mountain’s rugged side,
With silver tinged the river;
And through the forests, far and wide,
It danced on leaves aquiver.
O, lovely moonlight! mild and fair,
In thy ethereal ocean,
Deep silence, and relenting care,
Allure to true devotion.
May we, from this mild light of love,
Depart, O! never, never!
Then in its brighter realms above,
We’ll live and reign forever.
