English text
Hail to thee, good Monarch Winter,
Though a blust’ring ruler thou,
Yet we love thy ruddy visage,
And thy honest frosted brow!
Oft about our ears thou railest,
Fiercely hurling blast and storm;
Still we know a score of monarchs
Who would do us much more harm!
Though with hail and snows and tempest,
Thou thy subjects dost regale,
Still, like loyal hearts, we greet thee,
Monarch Winter! hail! all hail!
Once a year comes Father Christmas,
To partake thy festive cheer;
Then the rout and revel soundeth,
For we all love Christmas dear!
Oft he grasps thy frozen fingers,
Yet they bode thy guest no harm;
For he knows ’tis but iced surface,
And, beneath, thine heart is warm.
Though with hail and snows and tempest,
Thou thy subjects dost regale,
Still, like loyal hearts, we greet thee,
Monarch Winter! hail! all hail!
