Biography
Joseph Warren Yoder was born in Belleville, Pennsylvania. He had a traditional Amish education with musical training at a local singing school. He briefly taught school in Milltown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Brethren Normal School (Juniata College) in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, attended the Elkhart Institute (Goshen College) in Indiana and Northwestern University in Illinois. He worked as a college recruiter for Juniata College and led singing schools for Mennonites throughout Pennsylvania. He became the first successful Mennonite literary figure in the United States, writing a semi-fictional account of his mother's life, Rosanna of the Amish (1940). His musical accomplishments include research onto origins of Amish tunes with work to record and preserve traditional Amish music. He died in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
