General information

This is a popular Easter hymn. The words are a translation of 'Erstanden ist der heilge Christ', a Bohemian hymn from the 14th Century, translated by John Walsh in Lyra Davidica, 1708, and John Arnold, 1749. Fourth stanza by Charles Wesley in Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1740, as a one-stanza Hymn to the Trinity. This hymn is often confused with Charles Wesley's Christ the Lord is risen today, 1739.

Jesus Christ is risen today, Halle-Halleluiah,
Our triumphant holy day, Halle-Halleluiah,
Who so lately on the cross, Halle-Halleluiah,
Suffered to redeem our loss, Halle-Halleluiah.

Haste ye females from your fright, Halle-Halleluiah,
Take to Galilee your flight, Halle-Halleluiah,
To his sad disciples say, Halle-Halleluiah,
Jesus Christ is risen today, Halle-Halleluiah.

in our Paschal joy and feast, Halle-Halleluiah,
Let the Lord of life be blest, Halle-Halleluiah,
Let the holy Trine be praised, Halle-Halleluiah,
And thankful hearts to Heaven be raised, Halle-Halleluiah.

Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!
Our salvation have procured, Alleluia!
Now above the sky he's King, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia!
Praise Him, all ye heavenly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; Alleluia!
