Ottava rima is an eight-line rhyming stanza form, originating in the fourteenth century with Giovanni Boccaccio, and continued on to the fifteenth century by Ludovico Ariosto, and the sixteenth century by poets such as Giambattista Marino and Torquato Tasso. In English, ottava rima first appeared in Elizabethan translations of Tasso and Ariosto. The form also became popular for original works.
