Antonio Grimaldi
Born: 19 November 1879, Genoa
Died: 20 January 1949, Alessandria
Biography
The Rev. Dr. Antonio Grimaldi was a priest and composer who came from the Piedmont region of Italy, who was a Doctor of Music. In December 1902 he was ordained priest and appointed choirmaster at the cathedral in Alessandria. In July 1911 he won a competition for the post of Capellano Cantore at the basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, taking up the post in November of that year. In July 1919 he went on an artistic tour of the USA with Raffaele Casimiri, a very distinguished scholar and editor of polyphonic church music.
In 1927 he moved to St. Mary and St. John's church, Wolverhampton, England, (of all places!) to be the director of music at the suggestion of the parish priest, Fr. Sammons. He was a much loved figure there composing music of very high quality and a very successful choir trainer. At the outbreak of World War II he was briefly interned as an enemy alien in 1940 on the Isle of Man. After the war he returned to Italy in 1947 in poor health and died and was buried in Alessandria in 1949.
