General Information

Title: Almighty God, who by thy Son
Composer: Orlando Gibbons
Source of text: Collect for St Peter's Day

Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SAATB
Genre: SacredAnthemVerse anthem

Language: English
Instruments: Original was presumably set for consort of viols. Only the version with [[:Category:Organ accompaniment|organ]][[Category:Organ accompaniment]] accompaniment survives.

First published: c.1620
Description: Forcing a work of this period into the straightjacket of the modern time signature/bar line system leads to many 'weak' word endings falling on 'strong' beats. Care should be taken that performance is dictated by the word stress, not by the bar lines.

Almighty God, who by thy Son Jesus Christ
didst give to thy Apostle Saint Peter many excellent gifts,
and commandest him earnestly to feed thy flock;
Make, we beseech thee, all Bishops and Pastors diligently
to preach thy holy Word, and the people obediently to follow the same,
that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory. Amen.
