The gentle spring has passed away,
The summer flowers are gone
And not a Robin, all the day
Sings in the fields forlorn.

The withered leaves have flown away
From every forest tree;
Oh! hasten back, then, happy May,
The dearest month for me!

Return, O, lovely May!
Return And ever stay;
May birds and flowers
And joyous hours,
Bring back, Oh! dearest May! Return.

The chilling winds so sadly moan,
The wintry storms go by,
And o’er the meadows brown and lone.
The drifting snowflakes fly.

The singing brooks are frozen dry,
The waterfall is still;
And not a streamlet sparkles more,
Upon the distant hill.

Return, O, lovely May!
Return And ever stay;
May birds and flowers
And joyous hours,
Bring back, Oh! dearest May! Return.
