William T. Cramer

Biography
William T. Cramer was born in Hamburg, Germany, and educated at Hamburg Conservatory of Music. He immigrated to the US at age 20 and, within a month, was serving in New York Regiment C. After the Civil War, he became a respected organist and teacher. He was head of the music department of the State Normal School, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and at the Collegiate Institute, Towanda, Pennsylvania. He was organist in Erie, Pennsylvania, then served in several churches in Elmira, New York, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the First Presbyterian Church, and Park Congregational Church when Thomas K. Beecher, brother of Henry Ward Beecher, was minister. He relocated to Rochester, New York and was organist at First Presbyterian Church, then at Corn Hill Church. He also became Supervisor of Music in the Rochester public schools and was a member of the Board of Education. He died in Rochester. His compositions include more than 150 assorted works.
