Biography
William Henry Longhurst was born at Lambeth, London, England, the son of an organ-builder. Moving to Canterbury at age 2, he became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral at age nine. He studied organ with the Cathedral organists and at age seventeen was appointed under-master of the choristers, assistant-organist, and lay clerk. He later became organist at the Cathedral and received the fellowship diploma of the College of Organists. The Archbishop of Canterbury conferred to him a Doc.Mus. He retired in 1898 after seventy years of service to the Cathedral. He was granted his full stipend and use of his house in recognition of his service. He died at Harbledown, Canterbury, England. His compositions are almost exclusively church music including an oratorio, a cantata, a morning and evening service, anthems, hymn tunes, chants, and short services. His works also include a work for violin and piano, songs, and a few part-songs.
