Biography
William Augustine Ogden was born in Franklin County, Ohio. At age 8, his family moved to Indiana. He was educated in Indiana district schools and studied music at the community singing schools. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry where he organized a male voice choir. The choir became well known in the Army of the Cumberland. After the war, he studied music under Lowell Mason, Thomas Hastings, E. E. Bailey, and B. F. Baker. He gained great distinction as teacher and convention conductor. He taught music in many states and in Canada and held positions as principal of the normal school in Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Director of Music at the Iowa Normal School; and Superintendent of music of the public schools in Toledo, Ohio. In 1894, he trained 3,000 children for the great Saengerfest held in Toledo. He published a number of volumes of sacred choral music and contributed to other collections of choral music. He composed two oratorios, two cantatas, two comic operas and many gospel songs.
