Verbum caro factum est

General Information

Verbum caro factum est (from John 1:14) is used as the final responsory of Christmas Matins, also used for the Annunciation. There is also a Magnificat antiphon for vespers of the Holy Family with a similar text.

Latin text 1:14  Verbum caro factum est Et habitavit in nobis et vidimus gloriam ejus [or cuius gloriam vidimus] gloriam quasi unigeniti a Patre plenum gratiae et veritatis. Verse for Christmas Matins 1:3  Omnia per ipsum facta sunt et sine ipso factum est nihil. (Liber Usualis & Furmanik) 1:1  In principio erat verbum et verbum erat apud Deum et Deus erat verbum (Sheppard) Antiphon Verbum caro factum est Et habitavit in nobis plenum gratiae et veritatis; de cuius plenitudine omnes nos accepimus, et gratiam pro gratia, alleluia.

English translation 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (KJV) 1:3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. German translation Translation by Peter Rottländer 1:14  Das Wort ist Fleisch geworden und wohnte unter uns, und wir sahen seine Herrlichkeit, eine Herrlichkeit gleich der des einzigen Sohnes des Vaters, voller Gnade und Wahrheit.
