Sleep, sleep, mother’s own pretty one,
Sleep while the cradle doth rock thee in slumber;
Out in the west, all red with the setting sun,
Father is sailing,
’Mid the wind’s wailing;
Soon he’ll return, and joys without number,
Kisses and love he’ll bring to his little one,
Sleep, angels will keep father and mother and thee
Till the night is done, sleep, sleep.

Rest, rest, the lone waves are sighing,
Night all their beauty in blackness is steeping,
While mother watches where thou art lying,
Father is sailing,
’Mid the wind’s wailing,
Over the billows his frail bark is leaping,
