Biography
Sanford S. Turley was born in Logan County, Illinois, where he worked on the family farm and attended the district school. At the outbreak of the Civil War, although underage, he enlisted in the Eleventh Missouri Infantry, Company B, and fought at Vicksburg, Iuka and Corinth. After the war, he attended Eureka College of Woodford County, Illinois. He settled in Sumner County, Kansas, where he had an orchard of 300 apple trees, 400 peach trees and some smaller fruits. He also owned a music store in Blelle Plaine where he sold musical instruments, sewing machines, sheet music, etc. He also advertised tuning and repair of pianos and organs, and sewing machine repair. He was known as “Prof. S. S. Turley” and taught music classes in the region. He later moved to Boone, Missouri, where he died. He wrote a few songs that appear in collections of music for use in churches, schools, singing schools, and music conventions.
