Que me servent mes vers et les sons de ma Lyre,
Quand nuit et iour ie change et de meurs et de peau,
Pour aymer sottement un visage trop beau !
Malheureux es celuy qui pour amour soupire !
Ie pleur’et ie me deuls, ie suis plein de martire,
Je fais mille sonetz et me romps le cerceau,
Et si ne suis aymé, un amoureux nouveau
Gaigne tousiours ma plac’, et ie ne l'ose dire
Que ma dam’a l'esprit aux ruses bien apris,
Qui me hait maintenant que d’elle suis espris.
O dure cruauté, avant que ie l’aimasse,
Elle n’aimoit que moy, mais ores à mespris
Me met comm’un esclave, et s’en court à la chasse,
Pour en reprendr’un autre, ainsi qu’elle m’a pris.

Was nützen mir meine Verse und die Töne meiner Leier,
wenn Nacht und Tag ich mein Betragen und meine Haut wechsle,
um törichterweise ein zu hübsches Gesicht zu lieben!
Unglücklich ist der, der nach Liebe seufzt!
Ich weine und klage, ich bin voller Qualen,
ich verfertige tausend Sonette und zerbreche mir das Hirn,
und wenn ich nicht geliebt werde, wird ein neuer Liebhaber
stets meinen Platz einnehmen, und ich wage nicht, zu sagen,
dass meine Dame wohlgeübt ist in Hinterlist,
die mich verabscheut, nun da ich in sie verliebt bin.
O unbarmherziges Schicksal, bevor ich sie liebte,
liebte sie nur mich, doch nun hat sie nur Verachtung für mich
wie für einen Sklaven, und begibt sich auf die Jagd,
um sich einen anderen zu nehmen, so wie sie mich nahm.

English translation

What is the use of my verses and the sounds of my lyre,
when night and day I change my demeanour and my skin,
to foolishly love a face too beautiful!
Miserable is he that languishes for love!
I weep and moan, I am full of torment,
I write thousand sonnets and rack my brain,
and if I am not loved, a new lover
will always take my place, and I don’t dare say
that my lady is well learned of deceit,
who despises me, now that I am in love with her.
O merciless cruelty, before I loved her,
she loved only me, but now in disdain
she puts me like a slave, and now goes hunting
to take another, as she has taken me.
