Biography
Matthew Lindsay McPhail was born in Baillieston, Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland. After coming to the U. S., he directed the choir at the First Methodist Church in Canton, Ohio, and became a personal friend of President William McKinley, who attended there. He became an associate of Charles Taze Russell (president of the Watchtower Society, now known as Jehovah’s Witnesses). He was a travelling representative (“Pilgrim”) of the Society and published several editions of the hymnal “Zion’s Glad Songs.” He was also leader of the New Covenant schism from Russell's Bible Student Association. He died in Park Ridge, Illinois. He wrote several hymns, gospel songs and partsongs. His son, Matthew Lindsay McPhail. Jr., became composer and orchestration arranger for the Roxy Theatre in New York City.
