English text
“Laugh and grow fat” is a saying of old,
Whether or not ’tis the cause of obesity;
This I believe—that the physical man
Laughter demands as a kind of necessity.
Ha! ha! ha! Make the home ring again,
Ha! ha! ha! Make the home ring again,
Ha! ha! ha! Care will take ring again,
Laughter will drive him away.
“Tickled again” is another wise saw,
Do not believe it, ’tis not a reality;
Cheerfulness ever is health to the bones,
Nursing our grief is the bane of vitality.
Be not suspicious of innocent mirth,
Heartily join in the harmless hilarity;
Let the heart leap in its gladness and glee,
If you would have it the empire of charity.
Mirth should be timely, so do not be rash,
Take laughing gas, and proceed to extremities;
Laugh when ’tis fitting,—and let me just add,
Only the good should indulge in such lenities.
