Biography
James Cutler Dunn Parker was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of publisher and bookseller Samuel Hale Parker. He graduated from Harvard University and the Harvard Law School. He went abroad to study at the Leipzig Conservatory and returned to Boston, establishing a successful career as organist, conductor, and teacher of piano and harmony. A number of his private students formed the Parker Club, presenting concerts of instrumental and choral music. He was organist at Trinity Church and organist for the Handel and Haydn Society. He also taught at the New England Conservatory of Music. He died in Brookline, Massachusetts. His compositions include oratorios, cantatas, church music, hymns, works for piano, and assorted small pieces. He also wrote pedagogical pieces and works on harmony.
