Biography: G. Knowles of Sheffield is known for a collection Sacred Music, published posthumously under the supervision of his son W. Knowles. The Hymn Tune Index dates the publication to the period 1811-1819, on the basis of the presence of Robert Bennett (organist of St. Paul's, Sheffield during this period, and father of William Sterndale Bennett) among the subscribers. Several of Knowles' tunes in Sacred Music had previously been published in other collections, including W. E. Miller's David's Harp [c1803] and J. B. Wylde's Jubal's Lyre [c1808].
An obituary on p586 of The Monthly Magazine of 1 July 1811 (no. 214, or issue 6 of vol. 31), notes 'At Sheffield, Mr. G. Knowles, formerly master of an academy there. He composed several pieces of sacred music which were much admired.'
