Biography
Frederic Archer was born at Oxford, England. At age nine he became a chorister at All Saints’ Church, Margaret Street, then at Margaret Street Chapel, London. He studied music in London and Leipzig, and held musical positions in England and Scotland until 1880, best remembered during that time as organist and orchestra conductor at Alexandra Palace and conductor of the Glasgow Select Choir. In 1873, he lost all his music, printed and manuscript, in a fire. In 1880, he re-located to the United States and became organist of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York. He then was organist at the Church of the Incarnation, NYC. Archer later held positions as conductor of the Boston, MA Oratorio Society, director of Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, PA, and organist of the Church of the Ascension in Pittsburgh. In 1896 he established the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
