Hark! the evening bells are ringing!
    Chords of mellowed music stray,
O’er the hills and vales and meadows,
    At the closing of the day!
Rising, falling, as the breezes
    Waft them from the ivied tower,
Sweet, O sweet to hear their cadence
    In the tranquil twilight hour!
        Ring! ring on, ye evening bells,
        Nor till night-clouds gather cease;
        Some mystic charm within ye dwells,
        That brings a sense of calm and peace!

Hark! the evening bells are ringing
    As the reaper homeward wends,
And the sound of gladsome voices
    With their dulcet music bends!
Ah! their magic soothes the weary,
    Chases earthborn cares away,
As of peace they bear the message
    At the closing of the day!
        Ring! ring on, ye evening bells,
        Nor till the night-clouds gather cease;
        Some mystic charm within ye dwells,
        That brings a sense of calm and peace!
