Latin text Dixerunt Caldei captivis filiis Israel: Hymnum cantate nobis de canticis Sion. At illi: Sed quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini in terra aliena? Sed tu, Domine, libera nos de manibus eorum et cantabimus tibi canticum novum, carmen Deo nostro.

German translation Die Chaldäer sagten zu den gefangenen Söhnen Israels: Singt uns ein Lied von den Gesängen Zions. Dagegen jene: Aber wie werden wir das Lied des Herrn singen in fremdem Land? Aber du, Herr, befreie uns aus ihren Händen und wir werden dir einen neuen Gesang singen, ein Lied unserem Gott.

English translation The Chaldeans said to the captive children of Israel: Sing us a hymn of the songs of Zion. At that [they replied]: How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? But you, O Lord, deliver us from their hands, and we will sing to you a new song, an incantation unto our God.
