Descendit angelus Domini ad Zachariam, dicens:
Accipe puerum in senectute tua,
et habebit nomen eius Ioannes Baptista,
qui viam Domino praeparavit in haeremo.

Hic praecursor dilectus, et lucerna lucens ante Dominum:
ipse est enim Ioannes,
qui viam Domino praeparavit in haeremo.

English.png English translation

The angel of the Lord came down to Zechariah, saying:
Receive a child in your old age,
and his name will be John the Baptist,
who prepared the way for the Lord in the wilderness.

This is the beloved forerunner, and a shining lamp before the Lord:
for he is John,
who prepared the way for the Lord in the wilderness.
