Biography

David Baptie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was self-taught in music. He was Editor of “Harmonium Tune Book,” the “Harmonium Chant Book,” “The Scottish Book of Praise,” the “Union Song Garland,” and “Werner’s Hymn Book.” He was Author of “A Handbook of Musical Biography”, “Musicians of All Times”, “Musical Scotland”, “A concise dictionary of Musical Biography”, and “Sketches of the English Glee Composers”. His largest work was “Descriptive Catalogue”, a compilation of 23,000 secular part-songs, glees, madrigals, trios, quartets, etc. His compositions include many anthems, hymns, songs, and and part-songs. He died in Glasgow.
