Description: Billings' "Dartmouth" first appears in The Waterhouse Manuscript, copied by Susanna Heath on March 17, 1781; it was probably composed some time earlier. Apparently it was never published. This work is in two sections: an initial moderately-slow section in 3:2 time, and a second faster "fuging" section in cut time. The first section is an improved version of Billings' "New North" of 1770-1778-1779; the second section is newly composed. Words are by Isaac Watts, 1709, Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Book 1, Hymn 7, with nine stanzas. Billings used the first stanza in his composition.
