Publication

John Newton's book A Third Volume of Original Sacred Music is, as the title indicates, the composer's third collection of sacred music: the two preceding books were titled The Pilgrim and The Companion to the Pilgrim. The title page of the work describes it as:

'Containing Twentythree Tunes adapted to various Metres,

TWO ANTHEMS & THREE PIECES FOR OCCASIONAL PURPOSES
The whole Composed & Arranged for
Voices & Instruments with the Harmony condensed,
For the Organ or Piano Forte,
by
JOHN NEWTON,
Nottingham.

Author of the PILGRIM, Companion to the PILGRIM, &c.'

The title page indicates that the work was entered at Stationers' Hall, and that its price was 6s 6d. The imprint reads 'London, Published for the Author by J. Hart, Hatton Garden & may be had of the Author or any Book or Music sellers in the Kingdom.'

A Third Volume of Original Sacred Music is not itself dated, but referring to the copy at shelfmark B.463., the catalogue of the British Library gives it a date of [1845].

The work was published by subscription, and is prefaced by a list of the subscribers.

Publication date and place: 1845 for the Author by J. Hart, Hatton Garden, London.

Description of contents

The collection consists of 23 strophic hymn tunes, three set-pieces (through-composed settings of metrical texts) and two anthems. The anthems are numbered 'No 2' and 'No 3', apparently a continuation of numbering from the one anthem Blessed be the Lord God published in The Companion to the Pilgrim.

The music is laid out in full score with the parts in the order (identified in the first piece in the book) Tenor - Alto - Treble - Bass. The treble (air) and bass are bracketed together, with small notes on these staves filling out the harmony of a keyboard accompaniment (labelled 'Organ' in the first piece in the book). Both Tenor and Alto parts are printed in the treble clef an octave above sounding pitch. For the set-pieces and anthems, instrumental parts are provided, in each case for two instruments of treble range and one of bass range. In the first two set-pieces, these are specified as being for two violins and cello, while the second anthem specifies for the cello part only.
