Description: The third book of Hermann Finck's Practica Musica is dedicated to canons. This is the last of the 26 examples contained in it. As with the rest of the collection, this piece is unattributed; however, unlike the other items, a text is printed (in the discantus part only). The piece has the inscription Le desir croist quant et quant lesperance / Desiderium crescit cum spe ("Desire increases with hope"). Finck provides four voices and explains that a fifth voice can be generated from the discantus, an eleventh below, but on reaching the text "Le désir croît…", the note lengths are to be doubled.

French text As printed by Finck: Amour parfaict madonne hardieſſe de recneiller de uous ung doulx baiſer qui marendu an roeur telle lieſſe quil ſonffiroit pous tous maulx appaiſtr et quil ſoit urayl au poinct de men ayſer per uray eſpoir ie recois aſſeurance que quelq; iour en ueſtre demeurance ou bien ailieurs iauray tout mon deſir. Le deſir croiſt quant et quant leſperance uous men pouries en plaiſir deſayſer.

French text Spelling modernised: Amour parfait m'a donné hardiesse de recueiller de vous un doux baiser qui m'a rendu au coeur telle liesse quil suffirait pour tous maux appaître et qu'il soit vrai au point de m'en aiser per vrai espoir je recois assurance que quelque jour en vôtre demeurance ou bien ailieurs j'aurai tout mon désir. Le désir croît quand et quand l'espérance vous m'en pouriez en plaisir desaisir.

English translation Perfect love gave me daring to obtain a sweet kiss from you, which gave my heart such joy, sufficient to consume all bad things, and that would be so true as to comfort me that by true hope I would receive assurance that some day in your residence or elsewhere I will have all my desire. Desire grows with the hope you could release me in pleasure.
