General Information

Title: Lord have mercy upon me
Composer: Thomas Campion (attributed)

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: AATB
Genre: SacredHymn

Language: English
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1655 or earlier
Description: A short hymn included as an illustration of the use of counterpoint. It is followed by this commentary: "In this air the last note only is for sweetness’ sake, altered from the rule, in the last note of the treble, where the eight being a perfect concord and better befitting an outward part at the close, is taken for a third and in the tenor instead of the fifth, that third is taken descending, for in a middle part, imperfection is not so manifest as in the treble at a close, which is the perfection of a song."

  • The source is Playford's introduction to the skill of music, the second part of which claims to be a new edition of Campion's "The art of setting or composing music in parts" and thus suggests that the hymn may be by him. The score is at page 106 of the pdf file.
