This hymn of [[Philipp Nicolai]] appeared in the same collection as his other famous hymn [[Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern]], 1599. Again the poet is also considered to be the composer of the melody. The musical adaptation from this hymn by [[Johann Sebastian Bach]] is both famous as cantata (no. 140), in which the first stanza appears as a magnificent openings-choir (mvt 1); the second stanza is sung by the tenor, in trio with the strings. This part became most famous since himself arranged this trio for organ and published it in his six ''Schübler Chorales'' (mvt 4). The last stanza is a typical Bach harmonisation for SATB - choir.
