General Information

Title: The Muses Gardin for Delights, Or the fift Booke of Ayres, onely for the Lute, the Base-vyoll, and the Voyce.
Composer: Robert Jones

Number of voices: 1v   Voicing: Soprano solo

Genre: SecularMadrigal

Language: English
Instruments: Lute, bass-viol

Publication date and place: 1610 London, 'Printed by the Assignes of William Barley'.

Description: A collection of 21 songs for one voice, lute and bass-viol.

Notes: The lute parts of this book and of A Musicall Dreame are, in places, crude and dissonant. It has been suggested that, in these cases, Jones is only responsible for the melody and bass lines, but there is little external evidence to support this.

List of works

  • Love, love
  • Soft, Cupid, soft
  • Aze I the silly Fish beguile
  • The fountaines smoake
  • Walking by the River side
