What does Publications include?

In the past, on the composer page we have listed publications that the composer wrote, edited, or compiled. Alexander Gillet contributed a few works to Andrew Law's publications, but he had no part in compiling or editing those publications. In Law's 1783 publication alone, there are at least eight composers who contributed – probably more. But in this case, we have research showing that Andrew Law kept personal control on the publication itself (Richard Crawford, 1968. Andrew Law, American Psalmodist. Evanston, Illinois). I don't think we can say that Alexander Gillet published any of these. — Barry Johnston (talk) 19:16, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

What do composer pages include? All the composer works on CPDL and, under ‘Publications’ all publications where we can find these works. For example, on Pierre_de_Manchicourt, we can read ‘ works also appear in the following printed collections catalogued at CPDL:’ followed by publications by Attaingnant, Susato, Phalèse and others. Why shouldn’t we do the same for différent centuries? Claude_T (no access to tildes)
It seems to me such an effort would not be very useful, for the user has no idea in which publication a work appears. It also would be an large amount of work. Taking the example of Alexander Gillet, who wrote only 37 works: up to 1820, these appeared in 102 different publications, probably 30-50 more since then. Many of these publications are not readily available, even the index.
I took the top 30 composers, and here's what I found:
1. Orlando di Lasso (984) – All Publications – Publication list on separate page
2. Anonymous (978) – None – Not feasible
3. Traditional (615) – None – Not feasible
4. Heinrich Schütz (488) – Publications by Composer Only – Page needs restructuring
5. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (462) – Publications by Composer Only –
6. Luca Marenzio (367) – Publications by Composer Only –
7. Johann Sebastian Bach (343) – Few Publications Listed – Only 'Complete Works' Pubs
8. Claudio Monteverdi (333) – Publications by Composer Only – Page needs restructuring
9. William Byrd (306) – Publications by Composer Only –
10. Joseph Barnby (302) – One Publication by Composer listed –
11. William Billings (264) – Publications by Composer Only –
12. Michael Praetorius (210) – Publications by Composer Only –
13. Thurlow Weed (207) – One Publication by Composer listed –
14. Oliver Holden (203) – Publications by Composer Only –
15. Tomás Luis de Victoria (203) – Publications by Composer Only –
16. José Maurício Nunes Garcia (202) – No Publications Listed –
17. Carlotta Ferrari (198) – Mostly Publications by Composer – Contemporary
18. Gregorian chant (185) – None – Not feasible?
19. Johannes Brahms (171) – No Publications Listed –
20. Henry Purcell (171) – One Publication by Composer listed –
21. Carlo Gesualdo (170) – Publications by Composer Only –
22. Hans Leo Hassler (159) – Publications by Composer Only –
23. Johann Michael Haydn (154) – No Publications Listed –
24. Orazio Vecchi (151) – Publications by Composer Only –
25. Thomas Clark (150) – Publications by Composer Only –
26. André Vierendeels (149) – No Publications Listed – Contemporary
27. Tiburtio Massaino (146) – All Publications –
28. Andrea Gabrieli (144) – Publications by Composer Only –
29. Heinrich Isaac (141) – Publications by Composer Only –
30. Thomas Morley (141) – Publications by Composer Only –
Of these 30, 3 would not be feasible to list publications (Anonymous, Traditional, Gregorian Chant). Of the remaining 27:
– 20 – The publications listed were only those by the composer
– 4 – No publications listed
– 2 – All publications listed
– 1 – Some publications listed are collections, most are by composer (contemporary)
This looks like an enormous task to me, in automation, research, and in data entry. — Barry Johnston (talk) 00:53, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
