Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 93)

Latin.png Latin text

1  Psalmus ipsi David, quarta sabbati. Deus ultionum Dominus; Deus ultionum libere egit.
2  Exaltare, qui judicas terram; redde retributionem superbis.
3  Usquequo peccatores, Domine, usquequo peccatores gloriabuntur;
13  ut mitiges ei a diebus malis, donec fodiatur peccatori fovea.
operantes iniquitatem?
17  Nisi quia Dominus adjuvit me, paulominus habitasset in inferno anima mea.
18  Si dicebam: Motus est pes meus: misericordia tua, Domine, adjuvabat me.
19  Secundum multitudinem dolorum meorum in corde meo, consolationes tuae laetificaverunt
animam meam.
20  Numquid adhaeret tibi sedes iniquitatis, qui fingis laborem in praecepto?
21  Captabunt in animam justi, et sanguinem innocentem condemnabunt.
22  Et factus est mihi Dominus in refugium, et Deus meus in adjutorium spei meae.
23  Et reddet illis iniquitatem ipsorum, et in malitia eorum disperdet eos:
disperdet illos Dominus Deus noster.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth: thou God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
2  Arise, thou Judge of the world: and reward the proud after their deserving.
3  Lord, how long shall the ungodly: how long shall the ungodly triumph?
4  How long shall all wicked doers speak so disdainfully: and make such proud boasting?
5  They smite down thy people, O Lord: and trouble thine heritage.
6  They murder the widow and the stranger: and put the fatherless to death.
7  And yet they say, Tush, the Lord shall not see: neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8  Take heed, ye unwise among the people: O ye fools, when will ye understand?
9  He that planted the ear, shall he not hear: or he that made the eye, shall he not see?
10  Or he that nurtureth the heathen: it is he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he punish?
11  The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man: that they are but vain.
12  Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord: and teachest him in thy law;
13  That thou mayest give him patience in time of adversity: until the pit be digged up for the ungodly.
14  For the Lord will not fail his people: neither will he forsake his inheritance;
15  Until righteousness turn again unto judgement: all such as are true in heart shall follow it.
16  Who will rise up with me against the wicked: or who will take my part against
the evil-doers?
17  If the Lord had not helped me: it had not failed but my soul had been put to silence.
18  But when I said, My foot hath slipt: thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.
19  In the multitude of the sorrows that I had in my heart: thy comforts have refreshed
my soul.
20  Wilt thou have any thing to do with the stool of wickedness: which imagineth mischief as a law?
21  They gather them together against the soul of the righteous: and condemn the innocent blood.
22  But the Lord is my refuge: and my God is the strength of my confidence.
23  He shall recompense them their wickedness, and destroy them in their own malice:
yea, the Lord our God shall destroy them.

Káldi fordítás (93. zsoltár)

Hungarian.png Hungarian text

Dávid zsoltára, a hét negyedik napjára.
Isten a boszúállás Ura, a boszúállás Istene szabadon cselekszik.
Emelkedjél föl, ki a földet itéled; fizesd meg a díjt a kevélyeknek.
Meddig fognak, Uram, a bűnösök, meddig fognak a bűnösök örvendezni,
beszélni és gonoszságot szólani, szólani mind, kik igaztalanságot mívelnek?
A te népedet, Uram, megalázzák, és örökségedet nyomorgatják;
Ők kapkodnak az igaz lelkén, és az ártatlan vért elkárhoztatják;
de az Úr nekem oltalmam lett, és az én Istenem reményem segítsége;
és megfizeti nekik gonoszságukat, és roszaságukban elveszti őket, elveszti őket a mi Urunk Istenünk.

Metrical Paraphrase by Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady, New Version

PART I
O God, to whom revenge belongs,
Thy vengeance now disclose,
Arise, thou Judge of all the earth,
and crush thy haughty foes.

How long, O Lord, shall sinful men
Their solemn triumphs make?
How long their wicked actions boast?
And insolently speak?

Not only they thy saints oppress,
But unprovoked, they spill
The widow's and the stranger's blood
And helpless orphans kill.

“And yet the Lord shall ne'er perceive,
(Profanely thus they speak)
"Nor any notice of our deeds
"The God of Jacob take.

At length ye stupid fools, your wants
Endeavor to discern,
In folly will you still proceed,
and wisdom never learn?

Can he be deaf who formed the ear,
Or blind who formed the eye?
Shall earth's great Judge not punish those,
Who his known will defy?

He fathoms all the thoughts of men,
To him their hearts lie bare.
His eye surveys them all, and sees
How vain their counsels are.

PART II
Blest is the Man whom thou, O Lord,
In kindness dost chastise,
And by thy sacred rules to walk
Dost lovingly advise.

This man shall rest and safety find
In seasons of distress,
While God prepares a pit for those
That stubbornly transgress.

For God will never from his saints
His favor wholly take,
His own possession and his lot,
He will not quite forsake.

The world shall then confess thee just
In all that thou hast done;
And those that choose thy upright ways,
shall in those paths go on.

Who will appear in my behalf,
when wicked men invade?
Or who, when sinners would oppress,
my righteous cause shall plead?

Long since had I in silence slept,
But that the Lord was near.
To stay me when I slipped, when sad,
My troubled heart to clear.

Wilt thou, who art a God most just,
Their sinful throne sustain,
Who make the law a fair pretense
Their wicked ends to gain?

Against the lives of righteous men
They form their close design;
And blood of innocents to spill,
In solemn league combine.

But my defense is firmly placed
In God the Lord most high,
He is my rock, to which I may
For refuge always fly.

The Lord shall cause their ill designs
On their own heads to fall,
He in their sins shall cut them off,
Our God shall slay them all.

Metrical Paraphrases by Isaac Watts, 1717-1719

PART 1 (vv. 1, 2, 7-14) C. M.
Saints chastised, and sinners destroyed; or, Instructive afflictions
O God, to whom revenge belongs,
Proclaim thy wrath aloud;
Let sovereign power redress our wrongs,
Let justice smite the proud.

They say, "The Lord nor sees nor hears:"
When will the fools be wise?
Can he be deaf who formed their ears?
Or blind, who made their eyes?

He knows their impious thoughts are vain,
And they shall feel his power;
His wrath shall pierce their souls with pain
In some surprising hour.

But if thy saints deserve rebuke,
Thou hast a gentler rod;
Thy providences and thy book
Shall make them know their God.

Blest is the man thy hands chastise,
And to his duty draw;
Thy scourges make thy children wise
When they forget thy law.

But God will ne'er cast off his saints,
Nor his own promise break
He pardons his inheritance
For their Redeemer's sake.

PART 2 (vv. 16-23) C. M.
God our support and comfort.
Who will arise and plead my right
Against my numerous foes,
While earth and hell their force unite,
And all my hopes oppose?

Had not the Lord, my rock, my help,
Sustained my fainting head,
My life had now in silence dwelt,
My soul amongst the dead.

"Alas! my sliding feet!" I cried;
Thy promise was my prop;
Thy grace stood constant by my side,
Thy Spirit bore me up.

While multitudes of mournful thoughts
Within my bosom roll,
Thy boundless love forgives my faults,
Thy comforts cheer my soul.

Powers of iniquity may rise,
And frame pernicious laws;
But God my refuge rules the skies,
He will defend my cause.

Let malice vent her rage aloud,
Let bold blasphemers scoff;
The Lord our God shall judge the proud
And cut the sinners off.
