Text and translations

Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 126)

Latin.png Latin text 1  Canticum graduum Salomonis. Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum,
in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam.
doloris.
inimicis suis in porta.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text 1  Except the Lord build the house:
their labour is but lost that build it. 2  Except the Lord keep the city: the watchman waketh but in vain. 3  It is but lost labour that ye haste to rise up early, and so late take rest, and eat the bread of carefulness: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. 4  Lo, children and the fruit of the womb: are an heritage and gift that cometh of the Lord. 5  Like as the arrows in the hand of the giant: even so are the young children. 6  Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed when they speak
with their enemies in the gate.

Metrical 'Old Version' (William Whittingham)

English.png English text

Except the Lord the house doth make,
And thereunto doth set his hand,
What men do build, it cannot stand:
Likewise in vain men undertake
Cities and holds to watch and ward,
Except the Lord be their safeguard.

Though in the morn ye rise early,
And so at night go late to bed.
Eating with carefulness your bread,
Your labour is but vanity:
But they whom God doth love and keep,
Enjoy all things with quiet sleep.

Therefore mark well when ye do see
That men have hearts t'enjoy their land,
It is the gift of God's own hand:
For God doth multiply to thee
Of his great liberality,
The blessing of posterity.

And when the children come to age,
They grow in strength and activeness,
In person and in comeliness:
So that a shaft shot with courage
Of one that hath a most strong arm,
Flies not so swift, nor doth like harm.

Oh, well is he that hath his quiver
Furnish'd with such artillery:
For when in peril he shall be,
Such one shall never quake or shiver,
When he doth plead before the judge
Against his foes that bear him grudge.

Metrical 'New Version' (Tate/Brady)

English.png English text

We build with fruitless cost, unless
The Lord the pile sustain;
Unless the Lord the city keep
The watchman wakes in vain.

In vain we rise before the day,
And late to rest repair,
Allow no respite to our toil,
And eat the bread of care.

Supplies of life, with ease to them,
He on his saints bestows;
He crowns their labour with success,
Their nights with sound repose.

Children, those comforts of our life,
Are presents from the Lord;
He gives a num'rous race of heirs,
As piety's reward.

As arrows in a giant's hand,
When marching forth to war,
E'en so the sons of sprightly youth
Their parents' safeguard are.

Happy the man whose quiver's fill'd
With these prevailing arms;
He needs not fear to meet his foe
At law, or war's alarms.

French translation

German translation

denn Seinen Freunden gibt Er's schlafend.

Hungarian.png Hungarian translation

Salamon éneke a fölmenetekre.

Douay-Rheims Bible

English.png English translation 1  Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it. 2  It is vain for you to rise before light, rise ye after you have sitten, you that eat the bread of sorrow. When he shall give sleep to his beloved, 3  behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb. 4  As arrows in the hand of the mighty, so the children of them that have been shaken. 5  Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them; he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, and now and always,
and to ages of ages. Amen.
