Born: 1521

Biography
Philippe de Monte (the name has several variants, and is probably a Latinization of Van den Berghe) was born in Mechlin in 1521. He was contemporary and at least the equal of the more renowned Palestrina and Lassus. It is known he lived for a time in both Italy and England and was appointed choirmaster to the court of the Emperors Maximillian II and Rudolph II. He died in 1603 in Vienna leaving a oeuvre of over 35 Masses and hundreds of motets and madrigals.
