First published: 1814 in Freeman Lewis' The Beauties of Harmony
Description: Tune written by Jeremiah Ingalls, 1805, entitled Delay, for three parts and different words, in 4:4 time. This revision by Lucius Chapin, reduced to three parts, appeared in Southern Harmony (1835), and The Sacred Harp (1844-present). Some time before 1911, the tune in The Sacred Harp acquired an alto part unlike Chapin's.
Words by Philip Doddridge, 1755, entitled Salvation by Grace, with four stanzas. In Rippon's Selection, 1779, there are two additional stanzas.
