'''Description:''' Among surviving manuscripts of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, there exist an E flat major version and D major version of the Magnificat. The E flat version contains all of the movements available here, but the D major version includes only movements 1 - 12 (i. e. not movements A - D, which are specific to Christmas). None of the electronic editions available here, however, utilize the tonality of the E flat version. Editions of movements A - D, found only in the E flat version, have all been transposed to fit with a D major tonality for the Magnificat.
'''Description:''' The original version (BWV 243a or 243.1) in E-flat major was first performed on {{Cat|Christmas Day}}, 1723 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. A revised D-major version (BWV 243 or 243.2) was performed for the Feast of the {{Cat|Visitation}} in 1733. The Latin & {{Cat|Works in German|German}} interpolated movements numbered A - D are found only in the E-flat version, but might be transposed to fit with a D-major tonality.
