General Information

Title: Love
Composer: Jon Corelis
Lyricist: Jon Corelis

Number of voices: 1v   Voicing: A

Genre: SecularPartsong

Language: English
Instruments: Piano

First published: 2011

Description: Words and music by me. Written for female alto; female synth la-la voice used to simulate vocal. Sound file mp3 and score pdf attached. A sound file using flute for vocal (though it's pitched lower than a flute would go), which some people might like better, is available on Musescore.com (URL below.)

I've tried to show in the sound file how the pauses and tempi might be handled, but this can be varied ad lib by performers.

Original text and translations

English.png English text

They say that love is only
a yearning of the flesh,
and needs the body's lonely
hunger to keep fresh,

but I, too often choosing
to keep the two apart,
have learned, to my own losing,
that love is of the heart.

The body’s deprivation
is fed on what it takes;
the heart finds satiation
in every gift it makes:

the body rues its giving;
the heart has no regrets,
but keeps forever living
what faded flesh forgets.
