Biography

Henrik Rung was a Danish composer, singing teacher and conductor.

Rung was born in Copenhagen, moved to Næstved in September 1816 when he received the guitar and violin lessons. In 1825 he returned to Copenhagen, where he were taught music theory of C.E.F. Weyse. In 1828 he became a student at the double bass in the Royal Chapel, and in 1834 he was appointed Royal Musician.

He received in 1837 a scholarship to Italy, where he studied Italian vocal music and wrote off a large number of unpublished works from the Italian Renaissance music. When he returned to Denmark, he was in 1842 choirmaster at the Royal Theatre and a very sought singing teacher.

In 1851 he founded Cæciliaforeningen, whose chairman he was from 1851 to 1871. In 1862 he became a Knight of Dannebrog and in 1866 titular professor.
