Biography

Harvey Bartlett Gaul was born in New York City. He studied at home and abroad with notable musicians including George LeJeune, Dudley Buck, Alfred R. Gaul, Philip Ames, Alexandre Guilmant, Charles-Marie Widor, and Vincent d'Indy. He was assistant organist at St. John’s Chapel, New York; organist and choirmaster at the Emmanuel Church, Cleveland; and organist and choirmaster at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh. He was music critic for the Cleveland News and music critic and arts editor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was Feature Editor at The Musical Forecast and the first Music Director at radio station KDKA. He was also conductor of the Pittsburgh Civic String Orchestra and Savoyard Opera Company, and music instructor at the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He composed more than five hundred works, mostly remembered for organ and church music.
