Biography

Charles Austin Miles was born in Lakehurst, New Jersey. He attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and the University of Pennsylvania, and began a career as a pharmacist. He soon left that career with a calling to write Gospel songs. He became editor and manager at the Hall-Mack publishers for 37 years. His most well-known song is In the Garden. First published in 1912, it was popularized during the Billy Sunday evangelistic campaigns and by the many recordings including those by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Perry Como, and Elvis Presley. He also published many songs under the pseudonym A. A. Payn. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
