minor divisi

A guideline for categorizing works is found at Category:4_part_choral_music (now at Template:VoicingCatTxt). I wonder if it is time to split this category into SATB (performable with minimum of 4 singers) and SATBd (4 part mixed choir with minor divisi). Richard Mix 01:05, 15 January 2011 (CST)

 Help

Thanks for raising this question. I really like the idea of keeping SATB for works performable with just those 4 singers. However, for people trying to search by voice parts to determine what forces are needed, It is unclear whether the minor divisi needs an extra alto, or both an extra sop and tenor, etc. SATBd is too ambiguous for automated searching, and would instead require human eyeballing to determine whether you have the necessary forces to cover the parts.

If it is important to indicate that the divisi is minor instead of just using, say, SAATB, then how about something like SATBdA (for SAATB where the add'l alto is only involved for minor divisi), SATBdST, etc.? I think SATTBBdSA would help to indicate that a piece is never more than 6 parts (e.g. SATTBB) but briefly into SSAA at some point and you'd have a hard time covering the ranges in the edition's specific key if you don't have SSAATTBB available. The same way we currently display SSAATTBB with separate links for SATB.SATB and SSAT.ATBB or whatever, we can also include the various minor divisi variations calling for that minimum configuration of voices.

How about saving characters and using SsATtBb, for example? I still would like these all ready available in a supercategory, like we wound up with for 2-part choral music; 10-part choral music is still really very tedious to navigate from, with empty parent categories like SSAATTBBBB. I cant quite remember where we discussed this last (forums?) or how the coding for 2 part worked. My first suggestion is a variant on the Number of parts: 7; Voicing: SATB idea. I think you're quite right to take a longer view than SATBd (which I imagined as music suitable for large choirs), even though there is still going to be a certain amount of eyeballing to see whether an SAaTB piece is worthwhile for a chamber quintet. I like SsATtBb for indicating minor divisi and including these in an uber-category.
