Shape notes is a subcategory of Sacred music represented by hymns and tunes originally circulated using noteheads of different shapes (representing the various scale degrees do, re, mi, ...). The most significant collections were 'Sacred Harp' and 'Southern Harmony'. Some of the modern music engraving programs are able to reproduce the shape note method of engraving music.
