Original text and translations
Latin text
Vexilla regis prodeunt,
Fulget Crucis mysterium,
Quo carne carnis conditor
Suspensus est patibulo.
In (first) tenor:
Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Matthaeum.
In illo tempore dixit Jesus discipulis suis:
Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem.
Jesus [autem] clamans iterum voce magna emisit spiritum.
English translation
Abroad the royal banners fly
And bear the gleaming Cross on high—
That Cross whereon Life suffered death
And gave us life with dying breath.
The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew.
At that time Jesus said to his disciples:
My soul is sad, even unto death.
But Jesus, crying again with a loud voice, gave up his spirit.
