Office hymn for Pentecost, attributed to Rabanus Maurus (c. 780-856).

Veni, Creator Spiritus,
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia,
quae tu creasti pectora.

Qui diceris Paraclitus,
donum Dei altissimi,
fons vivus, ignis, caritas,
et spiritalis unctio.

Tu septiformis munere,
dextrae Dei tu digitus,
tu rite promissum Patris,
sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus,
infunde amorem cordibus,
infirma nostri corporis
virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius,
pacemque dones protinus:
ductore sic te praevio,
vitemus omne noxium.

Per te sciamus, da, Patrem,
noscamus atque Filium,
te utriusque Spiritum
credamus omni tempore.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
et Filio, qui a mortuis
surrexit, ac Paraclito,
in saeculorum saecula.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come,
From thy bright heav’nly throne,
Come take possession of our souls,
And make them all thy own.

Thou who art called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above,
The living spring, the living fire,
Sweet unction and true love.

Thou who art sev’nfold in thy grace,
Finger of God’s right hand
His promise teaching little ones
To speak an understand.

O guide our minds with thy bless’d light,
With love our hearts inflame;
And with thy strength, which ne’er decays
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our deadly foe;
True peace unto us bring;
And through all perils lead us safe
Beneath thy sacred wing.

Through thee may we the Father know,
Through thee th’ eternal Son,
And thee, the Spirit of them both,
Thrice-blessed Three in One.

All glory to the Father be,
With his coequal Son;
The same to thee, great Paraclete,
While endless ages run.

Version by George Wither
Come Holy Ghost, the Maker, come;
Take in the souls of thine thy place;
Thou whom our hearts had being from,
Oh, fill them with thy heavenly grace.

Thou art that Comfort from above,
The Highest doth by gift impart;
Thou spring of life, a fire of love,
And the anointing Spirit art.

Thou in thy gifts art manifold;
God's right-hand finger thou art, Lord:
The Father's promise made of old;
Our tongues enriching by the word.

Oh! give our blinded senses light;
Shed love into each heart of our,
And grant the body's feeble plight
May be enabled by thy power.

Far from us drive away the foe,
And let a speedy peace ensue:
Our leader also be, that so
We every danger may eschew.

Let us be taught the blessed Creed
Of Father, and of Son, by thee:
And how from both thou dost proceed,
That our belief it still may be.

To Thee, the Father, and the Son,
(Whom past and present times adore)
The One in Three, and Three in One,
All glory be for evermore.

Komm, Schöpfer Geist, kehr bei uns ein,
besuch das Herz der Kinder dein:
Die deine Macht erschaffen hat,
erfülle nun mit deiner Gnad.

Der du der Tröster wirst genannt,
vom höchsten Gott ein Gnadenpfand,
du Lebensbrunn, Licht, Lieb und Glut,
der Seele Salbung, höchstes Gut.

O Schatz, der siebenfältig ziert,
o Finger Gottes, der uns führt,
Geschenk, vom Vater zugesagt,
du, der die Zungen reden macht.

Zünd an in uns des Lichtes Schein,
gieß Liebe in die Herzen ein,
stärk unsres Leibs Gebrechlichkeit
mit deiner Kraft zu jeder Zeit.

Treib weit von uns des Feinds Gewalt,
in deinem Frieden uns erhalt,
dass wir, geführt von deinem Licht,
in Sünd und Elend fallen nicht.

Den Vater auf dem ewgen Thron
lehr uns erkennen und den Sohn.
Dich, beider Geist, sei'n wir bereit,
zu preisen gläubig alle Zeit.
Heinrich Bone, 1847

Spanish.png Spanish translation

Ven Espíritu creador;
visita las almas de tus fieles.
Llena de la divina gracia
los corazones que Tú mismo has creado.

Tú eres nuestro consuelo,
don de Dios altísimo,
fuente viva, fuego, caridad
y espiritual unción.

Tú derramas sobre nosotros los siete dones;

Gloria a Dios Padre
y al Hijo que resucitó de entre los muertos,
y al Espíritu Consolador,
porlos siglos infinitos.

Translation by John Cosin (used by Thomas Attwood):
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire.
Thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessed unction from above
is comfort, life, and fire of love.
Enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
with the abundance of thy grace.
Keep far from foes, give peace at home:
where thou art guide, no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and thee, of both, to be but One,
that through the ages all along,
this may be our endless song:
Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
