Bennett Mintern Swaffield's Twenty Five Original Melodies was published 'for the Author, at Falkner's, Opera Music Warehouse, 3, Old Bond Strt', London. The collection was dedicated 'TO THE REVEREND THOMAS SCOTT SMYTH, A.M. VICAR OF ST. AUSTELL AND ST. BLAZEY, CORNWALL AND LATE FELLOW OF ORIEL COLLEGE, OXFORD': the dedication is dated 'St Austell, June, 1822'.
Publication date and place: 1822 by Falkner's Opera Music Warehouse in London.
The work was published by subscription: in addition to twenty-three metrical psalm tunes (all settings of the 'New Version' psalms by Tate and Brady, it includes two settings of the Sanctus, two settings of 'Glory be to thee, O Lord' marked as 'Doxologies, between the Epistle and Gospel' (referring to the Book of Common Prayer communion service), a setting of the responses to the Ten Commandments from the communion service, a chant, and a dismission.
Of the twenty-three psalm tunes, two had previously been published in Richard Garbett's Sacred Harmony (1818), to which Swaffield was a subscriber.
