New sorting in works list
I’d like to suggest a new list of works for the Eccard page to substitute the automatically generated alphabetically sorted list. Instead I prepared a register of the prints containing Eccard works and assigned all his works on CPDL to the collection, in which they were published the first time. This simplifies orientation in Eccard’s œuvre, especially when distinguishing two works with similar or identical title. (And alphabetical order is preserved using the Eccard compositions category.) - Thank you for preparing the list of works by Eccard: well done. The only problem with manually generated work lists with respect to automatically generated lists is that, over time, misalignments often occur between the work list and the actual works available on ChoralWiki. For example, a new work may be added by a user, who may then forget to update the work list accordingly. In this case, the work is available, however users cannot trace it through the work list on the composer page. I would propose that the work list on the composer page is generated automatically, and your list based on collections is then linked to the composer page. Please also note that direct links from the work list to files (either internally or externally hosted) without passing through the corresponding work page are not any more recommended, as the user is not duly informed about the applicable copyright conditions, and the editor is not credited as required by the CPDL and CC licenses. - Good point Max, but have you seen Carlo's ingenious solution for text pages? We've a number of ways of arranging composer pages, even for a single composer: Johannes Brahms for example has three lists. Gereon, Eccard's publications are already mostly ordered by voice number and season, but you might be interested in my Purcell sandbox anyway. Richard Mix (talk) 09:18, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
- Richard, I'm not sure that I understand your point. How do you think that Carlos' solution for text pages can be applied to automate work lists on composer pages? The objective of the SortWorks function is to ensure that composer pages are always dynamically aligned with the work pages associated to the same composer. Alternative solutions that meet the same objective are welcome (especially if they don't use templates and DPL, which are quite expensive in terms of server resources). Max a.k.a. - Hello Gereon, the page you created looks great, thanks! Listing works by publication is really useful, but instead of adding these lists to the composer page, I suggest creating Music publications pages for each publication. I've created two such pages, you can see them at Johannes Eccard#Publications. What do you think of this solution? —Carlos

Thanks for your responses. I like Carlos’s suggestion very much – had already noticed, that my new register of works was partly repeated by the Publications section. I think, I will continue creating Music publications pages for the collections I had in my proposed register. Doing so, I will add any new information I found during my research to the Publications section on Eccard’s page; and thus, we can keep the (undoubtedly handy) automatic list in the Choral works section. I will also remove the direct links, as I understand the concerns Max mentioned – just went after some pages that don’t already heed that advice. —Gereon (talk) 20:23, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
